Discover the Origin: Tarrazú, Costa Rica

Nestled high in Costa Rica’s central highlands, the Tarrazú region is world-renowned for growing some of the finest Arabica coffee beans. Though Costa Rica is small (it could fit inside Texas 13 times!), its reputation for incredible coffee is anything but.

Location & Elevation: Tarrazú is located between 1,200 and 1,900 meters (3,900 to 6,200 feet) above sea level in the heart of Costa Rica. Its high altitude, cool temperatures, and nutrient-rich volcanic soil make it ideal for cultivating high-quality Arabica coffee. (For comparison, Rochester sits at about 505 feet!)

Arabica Beans: Only Arabica beans are grown in Tarrazú, prized for their smooth taste and lower bitterness compared to Robusta beans. The unique conditions of the region bring out the complexity and balance in every cup.

Microclimates: Thanks to its mountainous terrain, Tarrazú boasts a range of microclimates. These small environmental differences across farms give each coffee harvest its own distinct personality—subtle variations in flavor, aroma, and body.

Small Farms & Cooperatives: Most of the coffee in Tarrazú comes from small, family-owned farms, averaging just about 6 acres each. Many farmers belong to cooperatives, working together to maintain high standards and sustainable practices while supporting their local communities.

The Los Santos Region: This sub-region of Tarrazú is made up of many of these small farms and collectively spans over 54,000 acres. Each year, they produce around 780,000 fanegas (bushels) of coffee—crafted with care, tradition, and pride.

Tasting Notes: Costa Rica Tarrazú: Bright and clean, this coffee offers a balanced body with lively citrus acidity and notes of brown sugar, honey, and stone fruit. Often described as crisp and elegant, Tarrazú beans are a favorite among those who love a vibrant yet smooth cup.
