Green Initiatives
Destiny USA is not only creating a revolutionary retail facility, but a worldwide model for sustainability. Bob Congel is committed to obtaining LEED Platinum level certification for the project; a designation that represents the pinnacle of green building practice under the United States Green Building Council’s standards.
Destiny USA will incorporate a variety of green initiatives.
Brownfield Remediation — Destiny is rehabilitating the soil contaminated by the old “Oil City” tank farm and the junk yard.
Fossil Fuel-Free Construction Site — Almost 200,000 gallons of clean burning biodiesel has replaced toxic yielding diesel fuel.
Idle Reduction Policy — Instituted in April of 2007, The Destiny USA Idle Reduction Policy mandates standards for the amount of time construction equipment is allowed to idle while not in use, saving fuel and reducing emissions.
Green Parking — On August 29, 2007, 60 “Green Parking” spaces were created at Carousel Center. The parking spaces are allocated to guests who choose to drive fuel efficient and low emitting vehicles according to a list of over 300 qualifying vehicles from the American Coalition for an Energy Efficient Economy (ACEEE). The parking spaces are conveniently located near every mall entrance.
* GPS Guided Construction — Bulldozers, excavators, and graders are equipped with GPS systems that precisely control land grading and excavation work. This eliminates the amount of costly and time- consuming rework.
Construction Waste Management — Destiny USA has committed to diverting 95% of its construction waste from the landfill and performing at this level.
Green Power for Carousel Center — Over 19,000,000 kWhs of electricity is now coming from renewable sources at the Carousel Center. This is the equivalent to taking more than 2,300 cars off the road for one year.
Water Conservation — Rainwater will be captured and used to flush toilets, reducing the demand from local resources. The installation of low-flow fixtures and landscaping with native vegetation that requires no irrigation will also contribute to a projected 50% decrease in water demand.
Reducing Heat Island Effect — A high density of buildings with black roofs lead to an ecological imbalance called a heat island. The installation of solar reflective material on the roof of the building will lessen the impact of this phenomenon.
Sustainable Tenant Build-outs — Tenants will be provided with design and construction guidelines which will help them to implement the sustainable requirements of the project in accordance with the U.S. Green Building Councils LEED for Commercial Interiors.
Reducing Green House Gas Emissions — No Chlorofluorocarbon — based refrigerants (CFCs) will be used in the buildings HVAC&R systems. CFC is proven to contribute to the depletion of the ozone layer.
Renewable Energy — The project will be powered by a free-standing on-site renewable energy plant powered by municipal solid waste (MSW) generated by the facility and providing over 16 Megawatts of power. Destiny USA will also install a 3.2 Megawatt roof-mounted solar array that will adorn the expansion.
Tobacco Free — Effective January 1, 2008 the entire project site is tobacco free.
Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) — A Construction Indoor Air Quality Management Plan will be implemented to help sustain the comfort and well being of the construction workers and the building occupants by reducing or preventing the presence of dust, air pollutants, odor and moisture.
Low Emitting Products — All adhesives, sealants, paints, coatings, carpeting systems, composite wood, and agri-fiber products will have low to no VOC (Volatile Organic Chemical) emissions.
